The Sacramento Natural Gas Storage Project
The Sacramento Natural Gas Storage Project (SNGS) is a proposed project that would utilize the depleted dry Florin Gas Field to safely store a vital new supply of natural gas for the Sacramento region. The SNGS project:

  • Brings a reliable energy source to our region
  • Stabilizes the local economy
  • Provides revenue streams to homeowners in the immediate and adjacent area
  • Creates a Foundation to give money back to the community
  • Uses safe, cutting-edge technology, environmentally-conscious design and operations
  • Is a good neighbor and works closely with the community, businesses and regulators

Operational Facilities
The Florin Gas Field is located approximately ¾ mile underground and is roughly centered below Danny Nunn Park (at Power Inn Road and 53rd Avenue).  Surface facility operations will be located at two industrial-zoned sites. The well site will be located on the east side of Power Inn Road at Junipero Street. The compressor station site will be located in Depot Park. Construction of underground pipelines will take place in an existing utility right-of-way, not in the streets.

Natural Gas Storage is Critical
Natural gas, a clean-burning fuel that provides a quarter of U.S. energy needs, is produced throughout North America and transported through a network of thousands of miles of pipelines. These pipelines are sized to meet normal needs, but peak seasonal demands pose a persistent challenge.  Peak demands occur in both winter and summer.  Storage facilities throughout the nation are the most common and cost effective way to meet our energy needs.

Natural gas storage is important for our economic security as well. Storage of energy in secure underground facilities protects the economy from the damage of interruption that could come from natural disasters. Natural gas stored beneath thousands of feet of earth and rock is also not a tempting target for terrorists.

Unanimous SMUD Board Approval Of
Contract Agreement
On Thursday, October 2, 2008, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District
(SMUD) unanimously voted to approve a one-year extension for the contract
agreement with the Sacramento Natural Gas Storage (SNGS) project.
Board member Renee Taylor added that the SNGS project would
"significantly benefit ratepayers".

Draft Environmental Impact Report
The Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Sacramento
Natural Gas Storage project is anticipated to be publicly released in
mid-December 2008.

Once Released, Information will be available regarding where copies of the
Draft EIR can be obtained (E.g., City of Sacramento, libraries, Sacramento Natural
Gas Storage office, online, etc.). A public meeting will be planned for the community to
learn about and comment on this environmental document.

Public safety is our first priority.
